If you know anything about turmeric, you know that it’s purported to have incredible natural pain-relief effects. But is this actually true? And if so, how does it work? In this blog, we’ll answer those questions and more so that you can better understand this powerful herb and what it’s doing inside your body.
But before we start…
What is turmeric?
If you want a refresher on turmeric, we’re here to help.
Though often called a root, turmeric is technically a rhizome – a root-like stem that grows beneath a plant underground.
For as long as written human history, the medicinal use of turmeric has been documented, and some theorize that it could have been used even longer than that, with some believing it’s been in use for about 8,000 years!
Turmeric can be grown just about anywhere, but the biggest exporter today is India. There, the rhizome has a rich history of being used as a health remedy, in the kitchen, and traditionally. From being worn as an amulet to ward off evil spirits to having a place in wedding ceremonies to being a staple of the ancient Ayurvedic medical system, turmeric is very important in India.
But turmeric has always found its way across the world, namely for its health benefits. Thanks to its many beneficial compounds – the most potent of which is curcumin – turmeric is used by people everywhere to boost brain health, protect the heart, reduce inflammation, and stop pain.
And that brings us to this blog’s question – can turmeric stop pain?
Well, let’s take a look at the research…
Turmeric pain-relief studies
Turmeric and curcumin have been studied for their ability to reduce pain, specifically within the joints. A lot of research has been concentrated here because joint pain – caused by arthritis – is the result of inflammation, which turmeric has been made famous for reducing.
So, let’s take a look at a few of these studies:
- A systemic review and meta-analysis published in the Journal of Medicinal Food in 2016 found that turmeric and its extracts, like curcumin, may be effective in reducing pain and improving physical function in people with osteoarthritis.
- A review of 18 animal and human trials published in the Journal of Clinical Medicine in 2022 found that curcumin supplements may be effective in reducing inflammation and improving joint mobility in people with rheumatoid arthritis.
- A systematic review of ten studies published in the BMJ Open Sport & Exercise Medicine in 2021 found that turmeric reduced pain and improved physical function in people with knee osteoarthritis as well as NSAIDs.
- A study published in the Drug Design, Development, and Therapy in 2021 found that curcumin has anti-inflammatory effects that can help protect against joint degeneration, among other health issues.
- A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study published in Nutrients in 2022 found that curcumin supplementation improved clinical outcomes in patients with knee osteoarthritis.
And the truth is that there are thousands of studies on turmeric and curcumin, with many of them focusing on pain and inflammation. But as you can see, turmeric is definitely having an impact on reducing pain in those with arthritis. So, you may be wondering what mechanisms are at work.
Let’s take a look…
So, how does turmeric stop pain?
Your body has a natural response to help prevent injury and repair itself from when it does happen. It’s called inflammation. Using the example of the studies above, when you experience joint pain, it’s because your body is trying to heal the damage done to the joints from wear and tear, which causes chronic inflammation.
While inflammation, in many cases, can be helpful, there are some things your body just can’t fix, so that inflammation persists, and so does the pain.
Turmeric mainly stops pain by managing the inflammatory response within your body.
This is also how over-the-counter (OTC) pain-relief drugs like NSAIDs work – by modulating the inflammatory cells within your body.
Turmeric regulates the amount of pro-inflammatory cells made and deployed by the body so that you’re not constantly dealing with the pain associated with inflammation. [1]
In short, turmeric:
✅ Regulates the body’s inflammatory response.
✅ It does this by reducing the production of pro-inflammatory cells and increasing the production of anti-inflammatory cells. [2]
✅ That way, your body doesn’t create inflammation unnecessarily and fall victim to chronic inflammation, then, in turn, chronic pain.
✅ This takes stress away from areas in your body where you may be feeling pain, like in your joints.
But the turmeric actually needs to get into your body…
While turmeric can be super beneficial, especially to those in pain, not everyone gets to experience its incredible effects. This is because it’s notoriously difficult for the body to absorb.
Thankfully, every time you take our RELIEF CBD Turmeric formula, you’re getting a FULL dose of turmeric.
This is because the turmeric in our formula is infused with our micelle liposomal formula.
With our formula, turmeric and its powerful compounds are absorbed directly into your bloodstream for optimal results. This is why people who take our RELIEF formula actually notice a difference…
