CBD is continuously growing in popularity in the health market as more and more people choose to use it for its great health benefits.

A common concern when seeking out and beginning to take CBD is whether or not it will be detected on a drug test. Drug tests are common in every day jobs, so this is a very valid concern.

While there are some CBD products that CAN be detected on a drug test, it all depends on where the CBD is derived from. It’s important to note that CBD is most often derived from hemp, not cannabis. So, typically CBD contains next to no THC whatsoever.

THC is more abundant in the marijuana plant, while CBD is more abundant in hemp.

THC is the main psychoactive compound in cannabis that produces the high sensation and intoxicating effects.

Let’s Break It Down

Hemp-derived CBD is sourced from industrial hemp plants, which are grown primarily for their fiber and seeds. Hemp is differentiated from marijuana by its levels of THC, the cannabinoid that possesses intoxicating properties. Under U.S. law, a hemp plant must contain no more than 0.3% THC.

Marijuana-derived CBD is extracted from marijuana plants that are generally grown and consumed for their intoxicating properties. The U.S. government defines marijuana plants as those which contain more than 0.3% THC. While most marijuana plants contain THC as the predominant cannabinoid, there are several strains of marijuana that are rich in CBD.

What does this mean?

CBD products derived from marijuana plants often contain THC levels of 0.3% or more. While CBD from hemp contain no more than 0.3%. So, if you want to ensure you are not getting any THC, choosing a CBD derived from hemp is your best bet. It will also help ensure that you pass a drug test as there will be no THC in your system

Now, that being said, there is more than one factor that contributes to the compounds within CBD. It does also depend on how it’s harvested. There are typically 3 types: Full-Spectrum, Broad-Spectrum, and Isolate.

Full-Spectrum CBD

Full-spectrum CBD extracts contain all of the compounds that occur naturally in the plant they were extracted from.

This includes CBD alongside terpenes, flavonoids, and other cannabinoids such as THC.

Full-spectrum marijuana-derived CBD oil may contain varying amounts of THC, but is legally required to contain less than 0.3 percent THC. However, it’s important to note that not ALL manufacturers disclose where their full-spectrum extracts come from, so it can be difficult to assess just how much THC may be present in a given product. This can make it difficult to know how much THC you may be consuming or to know if it will show up on a drug test.

Broad-spectrum CBD

Like full-spectrum CBD products, broad-spectrum CBD products contain additional compounds found in the plant, including terpenes and other cannabinoids.

However, all of the THC is removed.

Because of this, broad-spectrum CBD products are much less likely to contain THC than full-spectrum CBD products. This is the best option for those worried about consuming THC and passing drug tests.

CBD Isolate

CBD isolate is pure CBD. It doesn’t contain additional compounds from the plant it was extracted from.

CBD isolate typically comes from hemp plants. Hemp-based CBD isolates contain next to no THC. It is often in powder or crystal form, which can be smoked or vaped — however often not permitted with the same guidelines as broad- and full-spectrum.

Another important factor is the extraction process. You want to ensure you are receiving a product with the best process, such as a CO2 extraction. This is considered the highest standard of extraction for CBD products.

Proper CO2 extraction processes allow the manufacturer to pull out the purest and most potent CBD molecules that hemp can offer. It’s the most advanced method in the industry and the best way to create botanical extracts.

Now, if you’re looking for a broad-spectrum CBD that uses this process, SomaLeaf’s Liposomal CBD Turmeric is your answer. We use the type of CBD that doesn’t show up on a drug test but works to provide you with all of the wonderful benefits CBD can offer — plus the added benefit of liposomal turmeric!
