In 2022, the Medical Marijuana and Cannabidiol Research Expansion Act made it easier for scientific study into cannabinoids. As such, we expected to see more research into cannabinoids like CBD.

Did we?

Well, in 2024 alone, we did see some pretty interesting stuff! This includes the reinforcement of benefits we previously knew about and the reminder or introduction to some new benefits (and even new benefits from different cannabinoids).

That’s what this blog is all about! We’re going to look at some of the top CBD benefits that were being talked about this year (plus something else that was being studied and discussed).

Let’s get started!

CBD and anxiety

By now, you likely already know that CBD can help those who struggle with anxiety, whether that be generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), social anxiety, or another form of anxiousness.

But just because we’re aware of this benefit doesn’t mean we should stop studying it. The University of Colorado knows this, which is why they published a study in February 2024 called ‘CBD shown to ease anxiety without the risks that can come with THC.’

This specific study wanted to isolate CBD from marijuana to see how CBD alone affected anxiety compared to THC, the active ingredient within marijuana that is responsible for the “high” feeling.

Many people use marijuana to relax, but studies show that long-term THC use can actually worsen anxiety over time. Other studies have shown that adding CBD to THC products can counteract THC’s negative side effects, such as impairment and paranoia.

So, what about people who don’t want to use THC but still want the relaxing effects of cannabis?

This 2024 study compared a placebo, THC mixed with CBD, and just CBD to see which eased anxiety the most. The results showed that those taking just CBD saw the greatest drop in anxiety, without any of the adverse effects associated with THC.

CBD for endometriosis patients

This study was done in Berlin, Germany, and involved more than 900 patients who had been diagnosed with endometriosis. Endometriosis is a disease in which uterus tissue grows outside of the uterus, causing severe pain in the pelvis. It affects up to 10% of women and can be severely disruptive to day-to-day life.

Published in the journal Archives of Gynecology and Obstetrics, researchers surveyed patients on how they treat their endometriosis. They found that nearly 20% of the respondents used CBD products to manage their pain and related symptoms.

The study also revealed that CBD stood out as one of the most effective ways to self-manage endometriosis symptoms, scoring a 7.6 out of 10 in symptom relief. The most improvements were seen in patients’ sleep quality (91%), menstrual pain (90%), and non-cyclic pain (80%).

But most notably, 90% of those using CBD stated that they have a reduced need for pain medications as a result of taking the CBD.

This isn’t the first study of its kind, as other researchers have found similar findings regarding CBD and relief for endometriosis.

Researchers concluded the study with the following:

“The use of cannabis [has] a significant impact on the overall well-being and quality of life of women with endometriosis. The study indicates that there is a significant interest and demand for additional therapeutic options, and cannabis can potentially become an important part of a multimodal therapy approach for treating endometriosis.”

CBD reduces daytime fatigue

Another study, this one out of Split, Croatia, looked at CBD’s effect on daytime fatigue and psychological well-being. Published in Cannabis and Cannabinoid Research, the randomized, placebo-controlled trial followed participants for five weeks while they took either CBD or a placebo.

Following the evaluation, researchers made several observations. They found that those taking CBD instead of a placebo experienced:

✅ Improved energy levels

✅ Reduced daytime sleepiness

✅ Improvements in Epworth Sleepiness Scale scores

✅ Increased vitality

✅ Enhancements in psychological well-being

This study only adds to a growing body of studies showing how CBD can relieve symptoms related to stress and fatigue.

CBD and stress in dogs

Did you know that CBD isn’t just for humans anymore? Turns out, our furry friends can benefit from the compound as well!

While there have been other studies in this area, a study published in the Journal of Animal Science in January 2024 showed that daily CBD decreased anxiety in dogs, specifically in dogs that were afraid of car travel.

Following CBD use, dogs that were previously anxious in the car showed a reduction in behavioral ratings such as panting, whining, and yawning. They also showed improved physical scores, including lower cortisol (stress hormone) levels and decreased heart rate.

If you have a pet that gets nervous in the car or during other circumstances, giving them CBD can help calm them down so they can be happier on their trip!

Like humans, dogs have unique endocannabinoid systems, so the ideal amount will vary. For SomaLeaf, we recommend consulting your veterinarian to find the right dosage based on weight, size, and medical history.

CBG and CBN: other emerging cannabinoids

We’re also learning more about other cannabinoids, including cannabigerol (CBG) and cannabinol (CBN). As time progresses, human trials are being published on these emerging cannabinoids. In 2024, we saw exciting research on both CBG and CBN.

Here’s what was found:

CBG can improve memory while reducing anxiety and stress. A July 2024 study from Washington State University found that right after taking CBG, users felt calmer and had improved memory recall, remembering a list of words significantly better than those taking a placebo.

CBN can improve sleep. This has been the thought about CBN all along, but this human trial just adds further proof. The study’s findings showed that nightly CBN use reduced the number of sleep disturbances throughout the night, allowing users to stay asleep longer and reducing daytime fatigue.
